Types of Appliances
There are basically two types of appliances : removable and fixed.
Removable appliances can be taken out of the mouth by the patient :
Functional appliances: for children,
utilise the growth.
Aligners: Clear acrylic system for invisible orthodontics. These aligners are transparents.
Fixed appliances : braces which are brackets bonded to the teeth and wires
Vestibular appliances : visible, attached to the front of the teeth
metal (the most commonly used)
Lingual braces: bonded to the tongue side of the teeth, they are hidden and so are totally invisible.
These are guidelines, variations on these appliances are possible depending on the patient and his needs.
For example a trumpet player may prefer lingual braces or aligners to keep a purre note.
